I wanted to give a quick update, because after this weekend, there will be much more to report. We've been getting a lot of rain, which has been very helpful to all the weeds, and I want to get some more plants outside to get in on this fertile action.
Speaking of fertility, I want to give a little report on the surprise bonus peonies we discovered this year. Of course, they were limping along since we bought the house, but peonies are a kind of tuber that like it best when you clip them all the way back to the ground at the end of each growing season so they can make more the following spring. As such, we didn't know we HAD peonies till this spring, when they popped up out of the ground.
Now, maybe you're like me and have a set image of peonies in mind. Big green ball suddenly explodes into a fireworks of petals. Maybe you have a grandma or aunt with a picture of peonies hanging in her powder room. You'd be expecting this:
And you would be right. That is a lovely specimen of peony and it's truly breathtaking. Guess what else is a peony?
This little porn-star of the bee world. I have never seen a flower like this, and a photo really doesn't do it justice. Huge fuchsia petals surround a quivering mass of pollen-y yellow stamen. As I was taking this picture, a huge bumble-bee sidled over to Mistress Hotlips Mayhem over here, saw me and my camera and suddenly remembered he left the oven on. Whoops.
Don't you love SPRING?
